Taipei, Aug. 19 (CNA) Protesters against the government’s pension reform plan blocked athletes from entering the venue of the 2017 Taipei Universiade on Saturday, which meant most of the teams were unable to take part in the parade of nations.
The teams were lined up to enter the venue in alphabetical but only those from countries whose names start with A or B were able to get in. The others were represented only by a flag bearer during the ceremony.
Universiade spokesman Yang Ching-tang (楊景棠) said the entrance to the opening ceremony venue was blocked by the protesters. Yang said he was busy dealing with the situation and would explain later.
More than 6,000 police and security personnel tried to maintain order as protesters shouted slogans and waved banners, while members of pro-Taiwan independence groups handed out their flags and flyers to onlookers.
