A natural gas line was damaged on Spenard Road Friday morning, causing a gas leak that led fire crews to divert traffic from the area for about two hours.

The leak on the 2700 block of Spenard Road, about a block north of Northern Lights Boulevard, was reported to the Anchorage Fire Department just after 8:15 a.m. according to AFD deputy chief Erich Scheunemann.

“It does not appear to be a residential line,” Scheunemann said.

No injuries or fires were reported as a result, according to a statement from AFD, but the road was temporarily “shut down” in the area.

Lindsay Hobson, a spokeswoman for natural gas company Enstar, said the damaged line had been secured by 9 a.m.

“There’s no gas being released at this time,” Hobson said. “The gas flow has been turned off.”

The break took place when a piece of construction equipment working on this summer’s reconstruction of Spenard Road hit the line, Hobson said.

Repairs were completed and Spenard Road was reopened by 10:30 a.m., according to Hobson.
