Sevyn Streeter Blocked from Singing National Anthem at 76ers Game Over ‘We Matter’ Jersey – The BoomBox

The City of Brotherly (and Sisterly) Love, didn’t show any love for Sevyn Streeter who was blocked from performing the national anthem at the Philadelphia 76ers home opener against the Oklahoma City Thunder on Wednesday night (Oct. 26).

The R&B singer put the Sixers organization on blast (via her Instagram page) for blocking her performance because she was wearing a “We Matter” jersey.

In a video, a visibly upset Streeter informed her Philly fans that she wasn’t going to sing at the night’s game. “I was suppose to sing the national anthem at the @sixers and @okcthunder game in #Philly but minutes before @sixers organization said I could not because I was wearing a “We Matter” jersey. WTF!” she wrote in the caption.

In an interview with ESPN, the 30-year-old singer said she was hurt by the Sixers’ action to cancel her performance.

“I was angry, extremely, extremely angry, and disappointed and honestly brought to tears by all of it. It broke my heart,” she said. “Honestly, I was very excited about being able to perform the national anthem. I was really looking forward to that.”

In her place, Sixers cheerleader, Jemila Worley, sung the national anthem.

The Sixers organization did issued a statement regarding the incident. It reads:

“The Philadelphia 76ers organization encourages meaningful actions to drive social change. We use our games to bring people together, to build trust and to strengthen our communities. As we move from symbolic gestures to action, we will continue to leverage our platform to positively impact our community.”

Fans reactions have been mixed with some giving the Sixers organization a thumbs down for blocking Streeter, while others believed that the singer should have left her political views off the court.

Sixers made the right call on Sevyn Streeter. Their building, their rules. Be an activist on your own time.
