A proposed housing development for Portlaoise has been blocked.
An Bord Pleanala’s refusing permission for a mixture of 39 houses and apartments on the Abbeyleix Road.
Laois County Council had granted conditional permission to Respond Housing Association for the development, which includes 24 houses and 15 apartments on a 1.4 hectare site.
However an appeal was lodged by local residents, Alan and Anna Reddin, who were “primarily concerned” with the impact of the development on the residential amenities of their property.
An Bord Pleanala ruled that the site is not zoned for residential development under the current Portlaoise Local Area Plan.
It’s also considered that the development would have an “adverse impact on the residential amenities” of some existing properties, leading to the lowering of their value.
The Board refused permission by a two-to-one majority.
