The trailer had to be detached from the front of the lorry and turned around to allow it to get out of the mud before reattaching the HGV.

Jackie Murray, was travelling with her husband and grandchildren when she got diverted by the lorry and said: “I saw it, it had jack-knifed badly. The road was blocked off and cars had to go up the by-pass and through Downs Lane so there was quite a bit of congestion, just not at the roundabout.

“The front cabin had got completely stuck in the mud and bogged down. Police were diverting the traffic as they couldn’t move it.”

Gumsamy Venk, 45, assistant manager of the co-op store at the Texaco petrol station confirmed they had called the police after the lorry had got stuck blocking the road.

He said: “My manager was dealing with it from 12 but he left at 2pm so I took over. The lorry left just before 10pm. They had to detach it and spin the trailer around to allow the lorry space to get off the grass.

“The driver turned off the wrong junction at the roundabout, tried to turn around and correct his mistake but got stuck on the side of the road. Normally we get accidents at the roundabout but in three years I’ve never seen anything like that, it was very unusual.”
