Access Vikings morning walkthrough: Zimmer coaches with a heavy heart, Vikings … – Minneapolis Star Tribune

On most mornings, we walk you through what’s going on with the Vikings.

WHAT YOU MIGHT HAVE MISSED

— Coach Mike Zimmer’s father passed away Tuesday night. After yesterday’s practice, Zimmer choked up as he called his dad “a heck of a mentor.”

— Offensive coordinator Norv Turner confirmed that running back Adrian Peterson is OK, but he admitted “we all held our breath for a second.”

— Meet Terrell Barnes, the Vikings’ equipment assistant and ball boy extraordinaire who buzzes all over the practice fields here in Mankato.

— The Captain Munnerlyn situation has been a little curious, but the veteran cornerback said he isn’t worried about job security. Speaking of the Captain, Munnerlyn practiced with an edge yesterday.

— About half of the team’s passes Sunday night went to tight ends and running backs. Turner said you can expect more of that this season.

AROUND THE NFC NORTH

— Packers rookie QB Brett Hundley knows he won’t see the field in the regular season, so he hopes to make the most of his preseason action.

— The Lions retooled their offensive line in the offseason. And because it’s that time of year, of course the Lions think that group can be great.

— The new regime in Chicago has no ties to former first-rounder Shea McClellin, so he is going to have to earn a starting spot at linebacker.

TODAY’S VIKINGS SCHEDULE

The Vikings have changed their schedule for the final day of training camp. They practice from 9-10:30 a.m. and the walkthrough is at 3 p.m. After that, the team will spend the night packing for the move back to Winter Park.

SOMETHING TO THINK ABOUT

Vikings players can be particular when it comes to their gear, which is why a good equipment staff can be so valuable. So which player is the pickiest? According to Barnes, it is quarterback Teddy Bridgewater, though he could have just been taking a playful jab at his buddy. “I just have to make sure his gloves are the right size and strapped and ready to go when he needs them,” Barnes said. If only Barnes had been there for Teddy’s pro day…
